Aftab Yazd newspaper runs a front page interview with Ali Bigdeli, an international affairs analyst. Referring to the Baku-Yerevan war over Nagorno-Karabakh, he cited those who try to portray Russia as “Iran’s strategic partner” and recalled Moscow’s full support for Israel. On Russia’s silence in the recent Nagorno-Karabakh war, he said: “… In the days when there are verbal and diplomatic clashes between Azerbaijan and Iran and everyone knows that the reason for Iran’s protest is the presence of Israeli advisers in Baku, Moscow officials, like a few months ago when they remained silent until the last days of the war between Yerevan and Baku, are still silent. Why? Because high-ranking Kremlin officials will never risk their interests even if the region becomes embroiled in another war.”
“… The joint maneuver of Turkey, Pakistan and Azerbaijan, although accompanied by Iranian restraint, is a sign of a comprehensive effort to bring about geopolitical and geostrategic changes in the region that could impede Iran’s trade routes to Central Asia and Eastern Europe,” Bigdeli said. “It’s a serious challenge, as the Azerbaijanis, also known as ‘Upper Azerbaijan’, are already collecting exorbitant tolls from Iranian trucks, and the continuation of this behavior could remove this route from Iran’s trade cycle.”
“… Many of our relatively deep challenges can be resolved through diplomacy. Continued disputes with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the unilateral withdrawal from Barjam (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) negotiations will lead to all-out pressure and the formation of a coordinated front against Iran, which will have dire consequences for us,” Bigdeli warned. Although defense power and reliance on state-of-the-art military technology are part of political power, when problems and differences can be overcome through diplomacy at lower costs, why should reactions all be directed towards military resolution of such adventures?”
